On the western outskirts of Kyoto is a district called Arashiyama. Hundreds of years ago this area was already popular with nobles. Today it is a busy tourist area. There are shops, restaurants, a river, a bridge, a monkey park, a train ride, a boat ride, and of course, temples. You could spend a whole day here.
The plan was to go around on a rented bike. Unfortunately, I arrived at 4:30 and bikes had to be returned by 5. There were rickshaws waiting for passengers but that’s not exactly my style.
So I went on foot, searching for the elusive bamboo forrest.
