For weeks I was fearing the worst from the boat ride to Sabtang. The waves in these parts are known to be unforgiving, specially to those unaccustomed to life in the open sea. But I could not leave Batanes without seeing Sabtang. I took my motion sickness medicine and hoped for the best.
The falowa is as distinctly Batanes as the stone houses. Unlike most small boats in the Philippines, the falowa has no outriggers as it is designed to roll with the huge waves.
And roll it did. Sometimes the waves were so high I couldn’t see the horizon. Our boat man skillfully steered the falowa (with his foot) through the peaks and valleys, and we arrived in one piece 45 minutes later.
Welcome to Sabtang.
